THIRD GRADE: FY01
Instructor: SUSAN MANN
Welcome to Mrs. Mann's Website.  I hope the information here is helpful.

Wow, can you believe it is December already!

The three weeks of school are extremely busy.  Not only will we finish up the marking period, but we will have the second benchmark test on December 14-16th.

As we all know, the holidays can be stressful and our days may be less structured than normal.  At times, this can lead to disruptive students during school.  Hopefully, we can get through the season with minimum distractions.

My goal is to change the "Weekly Focus" portion of the website weekly.  Please check out the information every Friday for highlights for the upcoming week.

THIS WEEK'S BRAIN TEASER
Congratulations to last week's "brainiacs", Alex B., Madison, and Melanie who figured out that Mr. Madison picked 80 pieces of fruit.

Noah and his classmates are sorting the books in their class library. They will put all the picture books together, all the fiction together, all the dictionaries together, and all the biographies together. They estimate that the following will fit on the shelves.

Picture books: 93 per shelf
Fiction: 63 per shelf
Dictionaries: 31 per shelf
Biographies: 27 per shelf

Here is more information about the books in the library.

  • There are 54 biographies.
  • There are 7 times as many fiction books as biographies.
  • There are 23 fewer dictionaries than biographies.
  • The number of picture books is 9 times the number of dictionaries.

How many shelves will the students need in all?

Email me at manns1@k12tn.net with the answer.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUITY--STUDY HALL
I want to inform you about an educational opportunity that your child will have starting next week. Four teachers are going to rotate a “study hall” for make up work, reteaching/retesting skills and incomplete work. It will be held during recess time Monday-Thursdays. Your child will be invited to attend if he or she has any late work to do, make up work to finish, or skills
in reading or math to be retaught and retested. We are excited to offer this additional educational experience to your child if he or she needs it. It will help strengthen skills in a small group setting with lots of individual attention.

CORE EXTENSION LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

Students will have an opportunity to be retaught skills missed on their Benchmark #1 test after the Thanksgiving holiday.  If your child did not demonstrate mastery of a skill tested on the Benchmark Test in October, they will join a small group and teacher during recess to be retaught the skill.  We hope this will keep our students from falling behind.

SWINE FLU MIST
We have not received information on when the swine flu mist will be given.
We will let you know when we know.

STUDY ISLAND
We  have had our computer lab session learning how to use Study Island  so now
your child can use it at home as much as he wants! It is a great site for TCAP practice,
skill practice on all skills, and just plain fun!! Kids love the games that accompany the skill practice.
Visit Study Island often!!

LEARN WHILE HELPING OTHERS!
Go to freerice.com and practice academic skills while helping those in need!  For every correct answer, 10 grains of rice are donated to help end world hunger.  Students should do the "english grammar" category this early in the year as others may be difficult at this time but will become easier as we progress through 3rd grade. Thank you for helping those less fortunate, adults can play too!!!
HOMEWORK
Homework is any unfinished school work from the day and is due the next school day at 8 am. and Study Island review.
